In the lives of people in slum, the used dress/clothes is having a special place for monthly menstrual cycle.

More than the shelter & food, the used cotton clothes are very important in people’s life specifically to the people in Slums. Day-to-day, essentially people are using dress/clothes for the customs of traditional dressing culture — for dressing our nudity. In the lives of people in slum, the used dress/clothes is having a special place for monthly menstrual cycle.
The slum is called Railway Colony near Hebbal, Banglore is having more than 75 families which are unnoticed by any organization/government. Without electricity, the entire space of one family’s shelter is less than the size of our modern rest-room. They are hardly leading life just for everyday food — NOT concerning the infrastructure of shelter, electricity, health & education of their children.
Everyone of us is aware of – how the menstruation is significant in girl/woman’s life BUT for them the 3 days of menstrual cycle is another set of days in their life — with no care & hygienic.
Based on our study in the slums, there are:
- 64% girls/woman who are having the monthly cycle in the slums
- 6% girls are single & 94% women got married at early age
- Age group between 14 – 45 years
- 54% people are using used non-hygienic clothes in the age group of 14-38 years
- 46% people are using pads in the age groups of 16-35
From the beginning they had started believing that cloth is one aptly to use for their menstrual cycle due they are unable to afford the napkins and unaware of the non-hygienic cloth usage.
When our Humanitarian Volunteer Team was conducting cloth distribution to those people, we came to know that most of the people need clothes especially cotton clothes for the menstrual cycle. The moment made iNNER-EYE to think more than the distribution of clothes and offering educational support, the napkin distribution is very essential. Now the napkin distribution is one of the causes for the slum girls/women – distributing every month.
Now all the girls/women are using napkin pads 100% in the slums; and they are getting awareness about the menstrual cycle and usage of hygienic menstrual products.
